Mariah unleashes “Obsessed” today, album August 25th

Posted on 16 Jun 2009 at 5:18pm

Today Mariah unleashed her new track “Obsessed” on the world - more specifically, on Eminem.  The song is the lead single from her upcoming album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, which hits stores August 25th.  This hip-hop track opens with a quote from Mimi’s favorite chick flick, Mean Girls, asking (presumably) Eminem “why are you so Obsessed with me?!” Being the cunning lyricist that she is, Mariah delivered some hurtful punches at the rapper that will have you like “oh shit!”  The remix features rapper Gucci Mane, and both are sure to be hits this summer and light the airwaves on fire.  I wonder how Eminem will respond? Or will he finally fall back seeing as he got called out and smacked down by a diva.  I guess he don’t know Mariah don’t play!  Listen to it here and read the lyrics below.

I was like, “Why are you so obsessed with me?”

So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh

Will the real MC please, step to the mike?

So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh

All up in the blogs
Saying we met at the bar
When I don’t even know who you are
Saying we up in your house
Saying I’m up in your car
But you in LA and I’m out at Jermaine’s.
I’m up in the A
You so so lame
and no one here even mentions your name
It must be the weed. It must be the E
Cause you be popping hood
You get it popping, Oh

Why you so obsessed with me (Boy I wanna know)
Lying that you’re sexing me (when everybody knows)
It’s clear that you’re upset with me
Finally found a girl that you couldn’t impress
Last man on the earth still couldn’t hit this
You’re delusional, you’re delusional
Boy you’re losing your mind
It’s confusing yo, you’re confused you know
Why you wasting your time
Got you all fired up with your Napoleon complex
Seeing right through you like you’re bathing in Windex
Boy why you so obsessed with me?

You on your job
You hating hard
Ain’t gon’ feed you
I’m gonna let you starve
Gasping for air
I’m ventilation
You out of breath
Hope you ain’t waiting
Telling the world how much you miss me
But we never were
So why you trippin’
You a mom and pop
I’m a corporation
I’m the press conference
and you a conversation

Why you so obsessed with me (Boy I wanna know)
Lying that you’re sexing me (when everybody knows)
It’s clear that you’re upset with me
Finally found a girl that you couldn’t impress
Last man on the earth still couldn’t hit this
You’re delusional, you’re delusional
Boy you’re losing your mind
It’s confusing yo, you’re confused you know
Why you wasting your time
Got you all fired up with your Napoleon complex
Seeing right through you like you’re bathing in Windex
Boy why you so obsessed with me?

Why you so obsessed with me
Lying that you’re sexing me
It’s clear that you’re upset with me
Finally found a girl that you couldn’t impress
Last man on the earth still couldn’t hit this
You’re delusional, you’re delusional
Boy you’re losing your mind
It’s confusing yo, you’re confused you know
Why you wasting your time
Got you all fired up with y our napoleon complex
Seeing right through you like you’re bathing in windex
Boy why you so obsessed with me?

Mary J. Blige responds to autotune criticism

Mary J. Blige responds to autotune criticism

Posted on 12 Jun 2009 at 8:13pm

As you should know, Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige released new singles last week.  Jay’s “D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)” set the industry on fire as he slammed musicians for “T-Pain-ing too much” with the excessive use of autotune in new music.  Meanwhile, Mary J. Blige’s fiesty new single, “The One,” features the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul singing with some autotune!  Now, Jay and Mary have always seemed to be good friends, but could this put some bad blood between them?

Personally, I don’t think so.  Blige told Hot 97’s Angie Martinez that it’s simply an effect that she tried out.  In response to criticism, she said “To each his own. Do what you do, because I do what I do.”

From how I see it, Jay was only coming for the people who constantly use autotune - not for artistic purposes like Kanye or Mary, but simply because they have no other choice.  Mary shouldn’t even need to feel offended. So everybody else needs to chill.

New Music by JoJo, “25 to Life”

Posted on 12 Jun 2009 at 7:55pm

A new track by JoJo has leaked on the net called “25 to Life.”  It’s unclear whether or not this is the lead single from her new album, but nevertheless it is new.  I’m a little iffy about the track myself.  It’s enjoyable, but it doesn’t strike me as a hit.  The tempo is inconsistent and changes throughout the track which makes it a bit strange to listen to.  At first I thought something was wrong with my iTunes as I wondered why it kept speeding up and slowing down.  Then I realized, that’s just how the song is.  I ain’t tryna get shut down on my second day, so stream it here:

Film Review: Tennessee

Film Review: Tennessee

Posted on 11 Jun 2009 at 8:36pm

Last Friday, the Lee Daniels produced independent film Tennessee starring Adam Rothenberg, Ethan Peck and Mariah Carey, opened in a very limited number of theaters in Tennessee and New York, so I took the opportunity to go see the film - again.

Last April, the film was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival, where I saw it for the first time.  After not having seen the film in over a year, it was nice to see it again on Tuesday night.  Centered around two brothers, Carter and Ellis Armstrong (Rothenberg, Peck), the film follows their roadtrip back to Tennessee to find their estranged father.  Ellis, the younger of the two, is ill with Leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant to save his life, and after discovering Carter is not a match, their father is the only hope.

Along the way, the brothers encounter Krystal Evans, their saving grace, played by the lovely Mariah Carey.  There is much more to her character, however it would spoil the movie to reveal it all - so I won’t.  Krystal’s character brings a lot of warmth to the film and Carey shines in this role.  Her appearance is toned down from it’s usual glamour, and replacing her heavy New York accent is a Texan one.  She completely transformed to Krystal for this role, even altering her vocals to make them “less perfect” when she performs “Right to Dream,” an original song she wrote and played on the guitar for the film.

Although slow-moving in the beginning, the story picks up in the second half and ends with an unusual, yet heart-warming twist.  But you’ll have to see the movie to find out what that is.  The limited release ended today in most theaters, however the DVD will be available September 1st according to Amazon.com.  For more about the film, theaters, and trailer, visit it’s official website.
